Update: On January 18, 2023, Dr. Henning received the 2023 George D. Kuh Outstanding Contribution to Literature and/or Research Award from NASPA—Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education.

What is assessment within higher education? Dr. Gavin Henning, Professor of Higher Education and New England College’s resident expert on the topic, defines assessment as learning: learning what students are learning, learning what works, and learning how to improve.

Henning, who teaches in NEC’s Doctor of Education programs, has published two new books on the topics of assessment and student success.

His previous books include the following:

Henning guides assessment work at NEC by co-chairing the Institutional Assessment Committee that supports assessment across the College, helping faculty and staff determine the extent to which their programs and services achieve espoused goals and the institutional mission and identifying opportunities to improve these programs and services. The ultimate goal of assessment at NEC is to support student learning and success.

This goal of student learning and success drives Henning’s work. His current scholarship focuses on equity-centered assessment. “How do we make sure our programs and services are helping all students, not just the majority? How can we address the disparate outcomes for non-white students on our campuses?” he asks.
