Student-Run Newspaper Joins Two Journalism Organizations in New Hampshire
The NewEnglander at New England College gains membership in the New Hampshire Press Association and the Granite State News Collaborative.
The NewEnglander, the student-run newspaper at New England College (NEC), recently joined two New Hampshire journalism organizations that provide opportunities for student-journalists to live what they learn: the New Hampshire Press Association and The Granite State News Collaborative.
As an associate member of the New Hampshire Press Association, The NewEnglander’s student-journalists can attend workshops with professional journalists and submit their work for awards consideration. The newspaper’s membership in the Granite State News Collaborative, a news-sharing organization, allows The NewEnglander to run stories published by The Concord Monitor, The Keene Sentinel, and The Eagle Times while those publications run stories produced by The NewEnglander, giving student-journalists the opportunity to be published statewide.
“We are thrilled to add The NewEnglander as a partner in the Granite State News Collaborative,” stated Melanie Plenda, Executive Director of the Collaborative. “By giving students access to local news, we are helping them learn about, become more civically engaged in and care about the communities we hope they continue to call home after they graduate. It also offers them the opportunity to have their great work amplified and distributed in publications across the state, to network with local newsroom leaders and partner with other college colleagues and professional journalists.”
One of the hallmarks of a New England College education is the opportunity for students to live what they learn: getting outside of the classroom and into the field, internships, or community for students to apply classroom leaning in real-world environments.
“There is no better teacher than experience,” commented Colleen McElveen, a former reporter who now serves as Assistant Professor of Communications at NEC and faculty advisor for The NewEnglander. “NEC empowers students to publish content that is important to them, and these memberships in the New Hampshire Press Association and the Collaborative give our students even more real-world experiences that prepare them for life after college.”
