Dr. Militello serves as Program Director of NEC’s MFA in Creative Writing program. In April 2024, she began her five-year term as New Hampshire’s Poet Laureate after being nominated by Governor Chris Sununu.

She is the author of the poetry collection The Pact (Tupelo Press/Shearsman Books, 2021) and the memoir Knock Wood (Dzanc Books, 2019), winner of the Dzanc Nonfiction Prize. She is also the author of four previous collections of poetry, including A Camouflage of Specimens and Garments (Tupelo Press, 2016), called “positively bewitching” by Publishers Weekly, and Body Thesaurus (Tupelo Press, 2013), named one of the best books of 2013 by Best American Poetry. Her poems and nonfiction have appeared in Best American Poetry, Best New Poets, The Nation, The New Republic, The Paris Review, POETRY, and Tin House.

To be considered for this new award, NEC’s faculty members were assessed on the degree to which they participated in five categories of scholarship.

  1. Scholarship of Discovery
  2. Scholarship of Integration
  3. Scholarship of Application
  4. Scholarship of Teaching
  5. Scholarship of Creativity

Dr. Militello has been actively engaged in scholarship across all five categories. Through her own creative output, publishing credits, conference attendance, regional and national engagement, classroom integration, and role as Poet Laureate, NEC gladly names Dr. Jennifer Militello Faculty Scholar of the Year for 2024.

Faculty of this caliber enrich the student experience in profound ways. Dr. Militello’s extensive scholarship, creative achievements, and national recognition inspire students both inside and outside the classroom. Her active engagement in research and creative work sets a powerful example for NEC students, encouraging them to strive for academic and personal growth. With faculty who lead by example, NEC students gain access to mentorship, hands-on learning, and real-world expertise, ensuring a transformative education that prepares them for success.
