Dear New England College Community,

As we enter February, we join the nation in celebrating Black History Month—a time to honor the rich heritage, achievements, and contributions of African Americans throughout history. This year’s theme, “African Americans and Labor,” highlights the profound impact of Black individuals in shaping the workforce and advancing labor rights.

From the resilience of enslaved Africans who built the foundations of our economy, to the leadership of Black labor activists who fought for fair wages and working conditions, the history of African Americans is deeply intertwined with the story of labor in America. Their efforts have not only propelled economic progress but have also been instrumental in the ongoing pursuit of social justice and equality.

At New England College, we strive to embody these ideals by fostering an environment where every individual’s contributions are recognized, respected, and valued. Black History Month is an opportunity for us to deepen our understanding of the struggles and achievements of African Americans and to continue to commit ourselves to an inclusive and equitable community.

Throughout this month, I encourage you to engage with the history, stories, and voices of African Americans who have shaped our world. Whether through reading, discussions, or personal reflection, let us honor their legacies by continuing the work of equality in our own lives.

Together, we can ensure that Black history is celebrated not just in February, but all year.

Sincerely,

Dr. Wayne F. Lesperance Jr.
President
