Hispanic Heritage Month: A Community Message
Dear NEC Community,
As we begin Hispanic Heritage Month, I want to take a moment to recognize the vibrant cultures, histories, and contributions of the Hispanic community across the United States and the world. This year’s theme, Pioneers of Change: Shaping the Future, holds special meaning for us as an academic institution, where we take pride in shaping the future of our students, empowering them to become leaders and innovators.
For me, this celebration is personal, as someone who hails from Bayamón, Puerto Rico. Hispanic culture is woven into the fabric of who I am, and it reminds me of the strength and resilience our communities embody. As we reflect on the past and present, let us also look forward to a future shaped by diversity, inclusion, and the shared pursuit of excellence.
I am inspired by the words of Puerto Rican statesman and advocate Luis Muñoz Marín, who said, “We are still climbing a steep hill. We are far from the top, but we can see the top in the distance.” These words remind us that progress is a journey, not a destination. Even though the path may be challenging, the vision of our goals keeps us motivated and moving forward, knowing that each step we take is actively shaping the future we aspire to create.
The New England College community is invited to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month on Friday, October 4, from 3:30–6:00 p.m. in the Quad. There will be live music and dance performances, traditional Hispanic cuisine, art, cultural workshops, community speakers, games, and more. Together, we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with gratitude and a renewed commitment to shaping the future through education, inclusion, and the honoring of all cultures that enrich our community.
All the very best,
Dr. Wayne F. Lesperance Jr.
