New England College and HCA New England Healthcare Partner to Increase Skilled Nursing Staff at Three New Hampshire Hospitals
Nursing students gain real-world experience working at Parkland Medical Center, Frisbie Memorial Hospital and Portsmouth Regional Hospital.
New England College (NEC) and HCA New England Healthcare announce their partnership to increase the number of registered nurses (RN) in New Hampshire as part of the College’s cooperative Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program. This innovative three-year program allows nursing students to combine classroom learning with hands-on employment as licensed nursing assistants (LNAs) in partner healthcare facilities. Additionally, NEC faculty, HCA New England Healthcare staff RN preceptors and stus become a dynamic care team.
HCA New England Healthcare operates three locations in New Hampshire: Parkland Medical Center in Derry, Frisbie Memorial Hospital in Rochester and Portsmouth Regional Hospital in Portsmouth. Nursing students from NEC are scheduled to work at all three, and the first cohort began working as LNAs at Portsmouth Regional Hospital last fall.
“HCA Healthcare is committed to providing training and education for tomorrow’s healthcare workforce, and this new partnership with New England College is the latest step we’re taking to meet the needs of our industry and our community,” said Dean M. Carucci, Market President of HCA New England Healthcare. “We’re providing NEC nursing students with hands-on experience, with experienced preceptors who prepare them to work at the bedside while still in school, and we teach them how to provide compassionate care so that upon graduation, we know our patients will be in good hands.”
Throughout the program, students matched with an HCA New England Healthcare location will earn approximately 30% of their academic credits in the clinical setting, working at the bedside and building their nursing skills. Rotations within these healthcare settings allow diverse and authentic clinical experiences that prepare students for the workforce after graduation. BSN graduates will be eligible for full-time employment with HCA Healthcare and will have the skills to make a difference on day one.
“As an academic-practice partnership, NEC and HCA Healthcare are committed to sharing in the responsibility of educating, recruiting and retaining a nursing workforce who are prepared to address the complexities of the 21st-century healthcare delivery system,” stated Dr. Angie McPhee-Smith, DNP, RN, CNE, Dean of Nursing and Health Professions, and Associate Professor of Nursing at New England College. “Our strong partnerships with organizations like HCA Healthcare have already positively impacted the nursing workforce shortage in New Hampshire.”
