New England College Students to Witness Democracy in Action at the 2024 Presidential Inauguration
Once-in-a-lifetime opportunity allows students to witness America’s democratic traditions firsthand.
Henniker, N.H. – New England College (NEC) students will travel to Washington, D.C., to attend the 2024 Presidential Inauguration, led by Professors Nathan Shrader and Colleen McElveen. This extraordinary educational experience allows students to engage with one of the nation’s most enduring democratic traditions and explore their role in civic life.
Shrader, Associate Professor of Politics, and McElveen, Assistant Professor of Communications, serve as co-directors of the College’s Center for Civic Engagement. By organizing this trip, Shrader and McElveen demonstrate their commitment to NEC’s belief in providing hands-on learning opportunities that complement classroom learning.
“The Presidential Inauguration represents our nation’s values, history, and commitment to democratic principles,” said Shrader. “It’s an opportunity for students to connect with these ideals, deepen their understanding of the democratic process, and reflect on how they can contribute to civic life in meaningful ways.”
The group, including seven students and professors Shrader and McElveen, will witness the swearing-in ceremony and Presidential Inaugural Parade on Pennsylvania Avenue. Supported by NEC’s Center for Civic Engagement, the trip reinforces the College’s emphasis on integrating classroom learning with real-world experiences that foster civic responsibility.
“We are incredibly proud of professors Shrader and McElveen and our students for embracing this opportunity,” added Dr. Wayne F. Lesperance Jr., President of New England College. “This experience underscores the College’s commitment to fostering civic engagement and providing opportunities for students to live what they learn.”
The Presidential Inauguration is set to take place on January 20, 2025, at 12:00 p.m. as mandated by the 20th Amendment to the United States Constitution, marking the commencement of the new presidential term. By attending, students will witness the traditions and ceremonies that have shaped the nation for over two centuries.
